Building Retail Capability Workforce Development by: Mike Wallace
In this final article of the series on the Retail training package I would like to reflect on the issues that have been covered to-date and how these collectively contribute to the bigger picture of workforce development.
Last month fir was honored to present 24 Best and Less Store Managers (including 3 Regional Managers) with completing their nationally recognised Dual Diploma qualifications (Diploma of Management and Diploma of Retail Management).
Conducted at the Best and Less Roadshow with Mike West the CEO presenting the awards.
A few weeks back I attended the launch of the Queensland Overseas Foundation Scholarship 2010.This organisation provides young people who have completed VET Qualifications with an opportunity to live and work in their field of study overseas for a year. One of the speakers was a young guy who left school in year 10 and by his own admission “fell in with the wrong crowd”.
Last week I spent a very busy Tuesday and Wednesday with professional photographer Rod Bukholz, shooting various retail scenes throughout the city. The aim was to capture a range of retail images representative of the scope of fir clients – food, fashion, electrical etc.
These images will be used to update our suite of marketing collateral as well as improving training resources.
A big thank you to all who helped out and participated, especially all the retailers who kindly welcomed us into their stores and the fir staff and friends who posed for the studio shots – a tough job, but very much appreciated!
We have some great shots and look forward to sharing our updated resources with you – we’re sure you’ll be delighted!
Introducing...
Fionna Lane one of fir's Cairns based trainers
Hi, I’m Fionna, I started working with fir at the beginning of this year. I have been working in retail since I finished school. I left my home town of Tully to take a job in Cairns as Head of Department in a large souvenir store. I went on to try my hand in the fashion industry and was Assistant Manager and relief Manager for Suzanne Grae for 5 years.
After this I moved onto Rainforestation which is a large tourism park just outside of Kuranda village. It has 2 retail outlets that I was Manager of where I was in charge of about 30 staff which included training.
